With the start of Breast Cancer Awareness month, a topic close to my heart, after losing my mother to breast cancer in 2017, I decided to write about this important topic.
Breast cancer is the second most commonly diagnosed cancer in Australia.
Fifty-eight people in Australia will be diagnosed with breast cancer every day. That means over 21,000 people in Australia will be diagnosed with breast cancer every year, with over 3,300 of these people dying from breast cancer.
Although the numbers have increased due to more vigilant and available screening, the numbers are still scary.
The BCF stipulates the importance of women checking their breasts regularly for changes. Find the symptoms of breast cancer here: What Are The Symptoms Of Breast Cancer? | NBCF
The goal of a breast self-exam is to understand how your breasts typically appear and feel. Being aware of your breasts' usual appearance and feel, known as breast self-awareness, enables you to detect any changes or abnormalities, such as a new lump or alterations in the skin. Any changes found during a breast self-exam should be promptly reported to your healthcare provider. Adult women of all ages are encouraged to perform breast self-exams at least once a month.
